Giving Your Trees the Best Start
How to Transplant and Establish Your Kareela Hoop Pine.
At Kareela Tree Farm, we take pride in delivering strong, healthy trees with the best chance of thriving in their new environment.
Proper handling, planting, and aftercare are key to ensuring your advanced Hoop Pine establishes successfully and grows into a lasting part of your project.
Follow these simple guidelines to give your Kareela tree the best start.

Preparing the Site
Choose a site that suits the tree’s natural growth habit — full sun or partial shade, and well-drained soil.
Dig a generous planting hole
Prepare a hole 20-30% wider than the root ball diameter and from 0.9m-1m in depth. This encourages lateral root growth and stability.
Check soil drainage
Good drainage is essential. If needed, improve soil conditions by blending in organic matter around the hole (but avoid disturbing the base of the hole).

Handling the Tree
Keep the root ball intact
Our trees are hessian-wrapped and placed in wire baskets to protect the root ball. Keep this intact during transport and planting.
Lift carefully
Always handle the tree carefully preferably by the wire basket handles. Try to avoid disturbing the root ball and if using the trunk to move or lift the tree make sure it is adequately protected.
Plant promptly
Aim to plant the tree as soon as possible after delivery. If there is any delay, keep the root ball moist and shaded.

Planting the Tree
Set the tree at the correct height
The top of the root ball should sit slightly above ground level to allow for settling and drainage.
Backfill gently
Use the original soil to backfill around the root ball, firming it gently as you go to remove air pockets.
Water deeply
Give the tree a deep, slow watering immediately after planting to help settle the soil around the roots.
Note: Leave the wire basket and hessian intact during planting. This maintains root ball integrity.

Supporting the Tree
Stake Tree Securely
Stake the tree at the time of planting to provide initial support. Use flexible ties and position the stakes low and loose enough to allow some trunk movement, which helps develop strength. Ensure stakes are removed within 12–18 months, or once the tree is self-supporting.

Ongoing Care
Water regularly
Consistent watering is critical, especially through the first 12–18 months. Deep soak once or twice a week rather than light, frequent watering.
Mulch
Apply a 5–10 cm layer of mulch around the base of the tree, keeping it away from direct contact with the trunk. Mulch retains moisture and regulates soil temperature.
Monitor and adjust
Check soil moisture during dry periods. Adjust watering based on conditions, site drainage, and seasonal changes.
